During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, promising “a different age” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
