Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
