A 60-day cruise around the Land Down Under is being halted days after the tragic passing of an elderly woman who was left behind by the ship on a distant coastal location.

The passenger had been walking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the excursion for a break. The vessel sailed away leaving her and went back later that day after the crew became aware the passenger was unaccounted for.

A large-scale rescue mission found her person the following day.

Officials are examining the event, alongside investigators and the state coroner.

The CEO of the cruise operator said that travelers and staff on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the continuation of the cruise had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and previous technical problems".

Via official communication, he further stated that passengers would be provided a full refund, and said the company was working "to coordinate the homeward trips of the passengers via chartered flights".

Authorities also issued an updated communication, and said they had "delivered a order to the Captain" preventing any further travelers from getting on the vessel.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the vessel in Cairns upon its coming back.

Chronology of Incidents

The liner first departed the Australian port on October 24th, and was only 48 hours into the voyage at the moment of the elderly woman's death. The remote island was the first stop on the voyage.

Travelers on the vessel - who usually pay tens of thousands of dollars to participate in the cruise - were ferried there for a shore visit with the possibility of trekking or snorkeling.

The child of the deceased woman said that her relatives was "shocked and grieved that the liner left Lizard Island after an scheduled excursion without my parent".
