From Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Response to Jeffrey Epstein Document Disclosure is Divided.
Conservative responses to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise significant questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain rightwing voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, broader comment on the right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that contained no new data.
